Problem
A university laboratory graded practical work from many students. Copied work is hard to spot by hand and it makes grading unfair. The lab needed a way to check submissions so its grades could be trusted.
Approach
- I introduced a plagiarism detection system to the lab's practical courses.
- I managed it myself next to my other work in the lab, where I led the practical part of the courses and graded students.
- I built a user interface in Qt for the client application that used the plagiarism service.
- I used the checks as part of the practical assessment, so grading stayed fair and objective.
Architecture and design decisions
- The detection ran as a service. A desktop client built with Qt talked to it.
Outcomes
- The lab got a working plagiarism check for practical work.
- Grading became fairer and easier to defend.
- The lab's credibility went up.
Known gaps
- I do not say how the detection works or whether I wrote the service myself or set up an existing one.
- I have no numbers on how many submissions were checked or how many cases were found.
- I do not describe how staff handled a case once one was found.
- I do not know if the system is still used today.
